Electric Vehicle Power: Converting EV kW into PS

Modern electric vehicles (EVs) natively generate power through synchronous and induction electric motors. Because electricity is natively quantified in Watts and Kilowatts, electric car manufacturers primarily state motor outputs in kW.

However, buyers accustomed to internal combustion engines often prefer to translate these numbers into familiar PS.

Continuous Power vs Peak Power in EVs

Unlike internal combustion engines with relatively static peak power curves, EV drivetrains often feature two separate ratings:

  1. Peak Power (Spitzenleistung): The maximum short-duration output available during rapid acceleration (usually quoted in marketing materials).
  2. Continuous Power (Dauerleistung): The sustainable power output the cooling system can dissipate over a 30-minute interval (listed in registration documents).
  • 150 kW EV Motor: 150 × 1.35962 = 204 PS
  • 220 kW Dual Motor: 220 × 1.35962 = 299 PS
  • 300 kW Performance EV: 300 × 1.35962 = 408 PS
  • 500 kW Super EV: 500 × 1.35962 = 680 PS
